Neville Young in Memory
I first met Neville in 1999 shortly after Mr. Henry Goh decided to open an office in Singapore. I have many fond memories of Neville. He was a great mentor and teacher to me. His kind, gentle, patient and tactful demeanour made me admire him and want to emulate him. He was very careful with his words both spoken and written and would often choose them with utmost precision. He had a sharp eye for details. He would often bring mistakes I had made in my work to my attention in a considerate and thoughtful manner.
Neville taught me almost everything I know about patents prosecution work and I owe a huge debt of gratitude to him. He was an avid reader and would give me his novels once he had finished with them. We shared a fondness for animals and we had many happy moments talking about the idiosyncrasies of our pet cats.
During one Company event, we had sang the song “Leader of the Band” with modified lyrics in honour of him. After Neville left the firm, we kept in touch and met on several occasions on his stopovers in Singapore during his travels to England during the summer. We had spirited conversations during such meetings and he would often ask about the welfare of staff members in the firm.
I shall deeply miss Neville as my boss, mentor, teacher and a dear friend. May his soul rest in peace.
